New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
